The Rule of Law and Independence of Our Judiciary

Often times we’ll see decisions on the TV news or in the newspapers that judges rendered across the country.  While we may disagree with the result of the ruling, we can almost always be assured that the judge or panel of judges that reached the decision, tried to do so in as an impartial a method they possibly could. We have to be very careful when we see business leaders or government leaders criticizing the independence of judges who are issuing rulings.

We’re all very familiar with the Shakespeare quote “The first thing we do is kill all the lawyers’. That quote is often misinterpreted. That line was not written to say that all lawyers are corrupt or that lawyers are the problem, but rather the exact opposite.

That when someone wants to assume total governmental control, the first thing they do is kill all the lawyers so that there is no one to independently review their actions and conduct.
