Every year, Chicago Lawyer and the Illinois Jury Verdict Reporter — sister publications under the Law Bulletin Media umbrella — detail the top reported settlements. In 2022, the rankings were based on 393 Illinois settlements of $500,000 or more submitted to Illinois Jury Verdict Reporter between Aug. 1, 2021, and July 31, 2022. The report accounts for confidential settlements where Jury Verdict Reporter editors were able to verify details between the parties.
The 2022 JVR Settlements Report featured 101 law firms — 89 of which made the cut in the published list in Chicago Lawyer Magazine. Only 35 firms who made the list in 2021 returned this year and 66 new firms were included in the 2022 edition.
In 2022, Mitchell, Hoffman & Wolf ranked No. 20 among Illinois law firms in reported settlements, with three eligible cases for the list totaling $14,095,000. The firm’s top case of the period was a $6.5 million settlement for a Plaintiff who slipped on an icy driveway and suffered a cervical fracture and hemiparesis.

- The average settlement value rose 18% (compared to 2021) to $1.9 million while the median value grew 50% to $750,000
- Auto collision, premises liability, and pedestrian cases hit five-year highs
- Medical malpractice cases fell to a five-year low, down 71%
- 73% of suits and more than 82% of the total settlement amount came from cases in Cook County
