As we head into fall we look ahead to a new season, and a Federal holiday that honors those that have served in our armed forces. While Veterans day falls on Tuesday, November 11th this year, it is important we consider our servicemen and women year round. Not only for the sacrifices they have made, but to support efforts to ensure they are receiving the health care they deserve.
n late August President Obama made a promise to fulfill his “sacred trust” to those returning from America’s wars by overhauling a dysfunctional health care system, even as a new report documented “unacceptable and troubling lapses” in medical treatment.

Another perspective from the Military Times discusses how many of these executive actions are new versus a repackaging of old commitments. Per the article, an estimated 22 veterans die by suicide a day, although that number is likely higher because states report deaths differently and VA relies on statistics provided by individual states.
September is also suicide prevention month.Know the warning signs for yourself or a loved one, and make sure to have resources handy to get the assistance you need.
Did you know that Two million Americans have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, and 20 percent of them are estimated to have PTSD? New therapies are being explored to better manage and support veterans with PTSD.
If you, or someone you know, is a veteran suffering from PTSD please talk to your VA healthcare.Don’t judge yourself, seek help. The United States Department of Veterans Affairs has resources to address mental health, make sure to access them as necessary.
